Beltane Border Morris

We are Beltane Border Morris. Our roots are firmly embedded in the vigorous informal English/Welsh border Morris tradition, but our dances express the ancient myths and legends of Dartmoor. Our style is inspired by Dartmoor's granite outcrops and rushing rivers, its mysterious standing stones, and the changing of the seasons on the moors. We wear the traditional of the black faces and tatter coats, as they would have been worn in the days when begging and busking were outlawed. See us at local pubs, festivals or on the high moor throughout the summer and beyond.

Flag Festival

Five years ago, from scratch, Veronica Gould and Andrea Foxwell began Moretonhampstead’s Flag Festival. The aim to showcase the town and make flags in a way that encouraged art making, learning new skills, sharing, enjoyment, and social exchange. It has been hugely successful, involving a wide cross section of the community the workshops have become wonderfully active places of discussion, friendship, making and repairing.

The flags are made from discarded tents, and off-cuts from Cameron Balloons, the sycamore poles by Coppice and Cleave from local wood. We now fly 118 flags, (and growing), in our spirit lifting annual Flag Festival. Crediton and Bovey Tracey have caught the ‘flag bug’, and the group have trained artists in the techniques used. Each winter the work increases, the community of makers gather together to repair damaged flags, welcome new commissions and participants, designing and making new flags with them. This ongoing project turns the town into a fabulous open-air gallery and delights the soul.

One of Devon's most prominent art galleries, Green Hill is attracting the attention of some of the most respected South West artists. Names such as Peter Randall-Page, Susan Derges, and Peter Stiles have become synonymous with Green Hill over the last few years  having exhibited in the Gallery's large attractive contemporary space, and supported the Gallery’s developing programme.

The Art Shop offers space for artists to exhibit and sell their work from paintings, prints and ceramics through to textiles, wood and ironwork. Within this imaginatively converted former Primary School there are studio and creative workspaces for hire.

The gallery and shop is open Wednesday to Saturday 10:00  to 16:00.
