Raphael Wallfisch is one of the most celebrated cellists in the world. Having studied with the great Russian cellist Piatigorsky, he won first prize in the Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition in Florence in 1977. Since then he has enjoyed a spectacularly successful world-wide career playing with most of the world’s great orchestras. His repertory is vast, ranging from the eighteenth-and nineteenth-century classics to contemporary British composers. His discography is equally extensive, extending to over eighty albums and including almost every major work written for the cello. He plays a 1760 Gennaro Gagliano, the 1733 Montagnana “Ex-Romberg” and an exquisite modern cello built for him by Patrick Robin.
‘Wallfisch gives the finest account on cello I’ve ever heard.’ BBC Music Magazine.
