Dartmoor Women in Farming

Thursday 30th August

7pm

Using photographs  from the Hunt family collection taken at Foxworthy in Lustleigh (currently appearing in our exhibition ‘Four Views on Dartmoor’), and bringing in many other photographs from the moor, the talk will look particularly at the work of women on the land during the past 150 years, the specific tasks they undertook on the farm, and the many changes that have taken place. Simon will also tell the story of Olive Hockin, an ardent suffragette once imprisoned for her militant beliefs, who came to work on a Dartmoor farm during the First World War and whose writings provide a fascinating insight into the rural life of those times and the response to her presence as a woman farm worker.

The talk will take place in Moretonhampstead Parish Hall.  £8 pp

There will be a Licensed Bar on the night.
